During the early 1820s there was a small chapel on the site of the
modern day St Michael's. This has undergone many enlargements
and refurbishments since. During the early 19th century the building
was improved and enlarged. Again during the late 1860s onward
Edward McCabe, P.P, enlarged and improved the church. Once again
during the late 19th century and early 20th more renovations were carried
out by Nicholas Walsh P.P. With the addition of a 200ft tower.
Disaster struck in July 1965 when the church building was completely
destroyed by fire and only the tower remained. The church was
rebuilt as it is today and reopened in October 1973. I find the
building itself to be somewhat imposing without being over bearing
and the steeple only adds to this. The internal aspect of the church
is somewhat austere but its purpose is to provide a space for a
congregation to attend mass. and also which I find it does well
is to enable a quite and contemplative area for prayer.
Saint Michael is an Archangel and leader of the all the angels
his main roles are to combat Satan, to escort the faithful to Heaven.
to be champion of all Christians and the church, and to call people
from their life on Earth to their judgement. He is known as the
defender of the children of God.
