In nomine Patris, et Filii,
et Spiritus Sancti.
Amen
Blackrock Dublin, St John the Baptist.
The building of Saint John the Baptist church was completed and the church
was dedicated in September 1845. It was in 1922 when the parish of Blackrock
came into being, prior to this the area had been under the parish of Booterstown.
The church was built in what is known as the Gothic Revival style and is an excellent example of said style.
The church is situated between Temple Road and Newtown Avenue, (Main Street), with the entrance from Temple Road being the main walk in entrance.
It is a short couple of minutes walk from the centre of Blackrock village.
After entering the church building you are visually drawn up the central nave to a
beautiful Altar setting with an ornate pulpit to its left. There are a number of votive
candle shrines in the north and south aisles and the general ambience is of peace and tranquillity.
Blackrock village itself is serviced by the Dart railway and a number of bus services.
Saint John the Baptist lived circa the first century BC until circa 30 AD. He is said
to have been born a number of months before Jesus and is also said to have been
related to Him, possibly a second cousin. John spent a number of years in solitude
In the desert before the beginning of his ministry. He ministered and baptised in the
lower River Jordan valley, where he baptised Jesus amongst many others. He was
declared a Saint of Roman Catholic Church in 1900, his feast day is 24th June.
